About ICWI: ICWI emphasizes mechanisms underlying insect chemosensory based behavior, ranging through ecology, behavior, physiology, developmental, cell and molecular biology. In past workshops, emphasis has been on the nature of chemical signals and the insect's perception and response to those signals. Systems have ranged through taste and olfaction of larval and adult insects, and participant interests have ranged from basic research and to field application. Participants have recognized that, regardless of personal focus, a broad and full understanding of the system is an empowering influence on their studies. Beginning over 30 years ago, ICWI have been small, intimate meetings encouraging a friendly exchange of ideas and experiences. In this, as in previous meetings, the objectives are to allow short, informal oral presentations by each of the participant that will encourage open and cordial discussions.

Advances in genetics, molecular techniques, electrophysiological approaches, and behavioral analyses have allowed for a better understanding of insect behavior and the mechanisms involved. Basic knowledge is being applied to practical problems in agriculture and medicine. We seek at ICWI to bring together researchers using a wide-array of approaches to understand insect chemoreception and behavior together with those researchers who apply this knowledge to practical problems with the hope that all involved will benefit.

February 20-24, 2005 in Charleston, South Carolina

  • Restaurants (with map) near Hotel.
Charleston Orientation:Pick up a tourist booklet at the Visitor Center – includes excellent map of Charleston (or click HERE - hotel is @ #28). Areas worth exploring: College of Charleston; Market Area; Waterfront Park; historic residential district between Broad and the Battery (between King and East Bay); Battery Park.

Program Schedule: (Click HERE for Topics to Be Discussed)
Sunday (2/20): Opening Reception in Hotel, 6-8 PM
       Monday (2/21): Scientific Sessions 9-12:30, 2:30-6
Tuesday(2/22): Scientific Session 9-1, afternoon excursion, evening banquet
Wednesday (2/23): Scientific Sessions 9-12:30, 2:30-6 (final session)

The schedule is intended to allow all participants to present formally while providing ample time for informal discussions both within and beyond the formal sessions. We encourage participants to organize their presentations to stimulate discussion.

Efforts will be made to coordinate groups to area restaurants for lunches and dinners as well as after dinner activities. Reception and Banquet costs are included in the registration fee (there will be an additional banquet charge for accompanying guests). There will likely be an additional fee for the excursion (still being planned).

Email questions, comments, intent to attend to either Dick Dickens or Dick Vogt.

MEETING FORMAT: The meeting will be informal. Sessions will be organized based on participants' interests. Participants are asked to prepare short presentations aimed at informing the group of current activities but importantly to stimulate discussion (Powerpoint, Slides, Overheads). Presentations may be made as part of ongoing discussions or to introduce new discussions. Session topics will be organized to engage the majority of participants throughout the meeting; a sense of topics to be discussed can be gained from reviewing the research interests of the listed participants. All attendees will be provided the opportunity to present and are strongly encouraged to present. A range of interests is already evident, so the opportunity to integrate far ranging perspectives is significant.

INTERNET:Wireless internet is available in your rooms for $10/day, or in the lobby for $10/day (separate deals). The same is available in the conference room for $100/day (hence we will not get that). Wireless adapters can be obtained from the check in desk. Before you buy, try connecting in the lobby anyway. On two visits I have been able to access open networks sitting in the lobby; the Hotel does not seem to care. Port City Java (below the Hotel Lobby) also has a wireless network. See me (DV) if you need help.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: We thank Noldus and Syntech for providing support for refreshment breaks at the meeting.
